          Speaking Engagements

Dr. Derr is a member of the Speakers Bureau of the American Veterinary Society for Animal Behavior.
​Stipends are available to student groups and state associations from AVSAB to offset the cost of hiring any Speakers Bureau speaker. Contact www.avsabonline.org   



Dr. Derr has met twice with the students of the Behavior Club at the University of Minnesota 
College of Veterinary Medicine in 2012. She spoke about Common Behavior Problems, 
and about Using Behavior in Everyday Veterinary Practice.

                               On May 9, 2012, Dr. Derr spent an hour and a half with the first year vet students at the U of M talking 
about behavior problems in normal dogs. Thanks, Dr. Margaret Duxbury for this opportunity!

          Dr. Derr presented two hours of lecture at the 2012 MAVT convention on Friday, February 3, 2012.  Her topics were
"How to Speak Dog",  and "When Dogs Attack...some views on canine aggression". 
The MAVT convention was at the Hyatt Regency Minneapolis on February 3 and 4, 2012.

North Star Therapy Dogs, a group of volunteers with Delta Certified therapy dogs, invited Dr. Derr to their 
volunteer meeting on January 20, 2012 to discuss sings of aging in dogs, 
especially as it affects their work as therapy dogs.

Metro Dogs Day Care and Boarding invited Dr. Derr to a round table discussion of helping dogs with 
separation anxiety when they in a boarding kennel. The pizza and staff meeting were on January 20, 2012.

   Dr. Derr discussed "Feral Cat Behavior and Management" with the volunteers of 
The Wildcat Sanctuary on Thursday, July 21, 2011.

On Sunday, July 10, 2011, Dr. Derr presented a talk entitled "How to Speak Dog" at the annual Volunteer Picnic for 

RAGOM (Retrieve a Golden of Minnesota). Dr. Derr is proud to be a behavior consultant for RAGOM.

On Thursday, March 24, 2011, Westonka Animal Hospital hosted Dr. Derr for an informal presentation for its clients on                    
​Common Pet Behavior Issues.

During the Midwest Veterinary Conference, held in Columbus, Ohio from February 24 to 27, 2011,  Dr. Derr assissted  attendees of the Gentle Leader demonstration and lab.  She also helped with the low stress animal handling wet lab.

Dr. Derr was invited by the Minnesota Association of Veterinary Technicians to speak at their annual meeting,  held in Minneapolis on February 11, 2011. Dr. Derr's talk was titiled "Rational Shelter Medicine".

On November 23, 2010. Dr. Derr presented a lecture on "Canine Behavior Assessments in Animal Shelters" to an undergraduate class in animal behavior at the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Derr spoke on "Surgical Standards in Shelters" as part of the Forum on Feline Overpopulation presented by the Minnesota Conference and MVMA. The event was held at the Kelly Inn in St. Cloud, MN on May 19, 2010.

Dr. Derr presented a short communication at the annual joint meeting of the American Veterinary Society for Animal Behavior and the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists in July of 2007. Her paper "The Effect of a Behavioral Enrichment Program on Urinary Cortisol/Creatinine Ratios in Adult Cats in a Limited Admission Animal Shelter" was based on her original research project.
